I’ve put together a small collection of denim to fulfill my long-standing desire to create a series of customized jeans. In this case, besides working with the fabric itself, I wanted to preserve the original character of the garments.
I specifically collected American Levis because I knew what to expect from them. While they’re not selvedge denim, they have the well-known shape, sturdy familiar fabric, and deep fades. Plus, they’re iconic pieces. This series gives me a sense of wild freedom, the kind often portrayed in Hollywood movies. I imagine a fictional Keanu Reeves stopping by the roadside in a desert, fixing his bike, or Jim Morrison on stage, or just about every other rock musician from the Woodstock era.
Ripped jeans, in general, are a significant cultural symbol of counterculture, and there's much to be said about them, just as there is about these jeans in their original form.
